48TH ASIAN BODYBUILDING AND PHYSIQUE SPORTS
CHAMPIONSHIP & CONGRESS
Brief History of Macao
While most people instantly think of the huge gambling influence that Macau has had on the world, many do not realize that Macau is a city full of history. For those of you who have been to Macau and actually taken in a bit of the Macau culture, you would have noticed the strong European influence across the city, including St Augustine's church and the ruins of St Paul's Cathedral. This is because Macau was the last European territory in continental Asia before it was handed back to China back in 1999. Prior to that, Macau was a colony of Portugal having been so since way back in 1537. The Portuguese influence is still clear but Macau has come into its own since becoming a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and even more so in recent years.
